LIS McDERMOTT

Lis grew up in Leicestershire, as an only child to older parents, leaving home at eighteen to follow her dream and go to the Royal Manchester College of Music.

After three amazing years, she left to study for a Teaching Certificate, at Trent Park, London.

Lis then embarked on a teaching career that lasted for thirty-four years. During that time, she taught in secondary education, before becoming a schools Music Advisory Teacher, and then the Music Adviser for Wiltshire.

Also during that time, Lis taught the harp at Cheltenham Ladies College, became a mentor for the CT ABRSM course for the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, and was also an OFSTED Inspector. Life was busy, but she loved it.

Leaving teaching in 2008, at the age of 56, Lis was feeling disillusioned about where the ‘arts’ education was going.

2008 saw the birth of Lis McDermott Photography, which she ran successfully, until the beginning of lockdown in 2020, when she officially set up her Writer Mentoring business.

Lis also runs Lis’ Poetry Place, a group of like minded poets regardless of experience that meets once a month. Details on her website.
